memorial miscellany
.
I stopped off at the nearby Lutheran church to give blood today (what the heck, I had some) and saw something interesting from the parking lot.

holy shed!
It's a shed. But not just any shed...

stained glass
...it's a shed with a lovely stained-glass window. There's something you don't see every day.

I've also been taking pictures in and around local cemeteries.

novel gravestone
This is a design I haven't seen before. It has a metal frame (on a stick) with what appears to be a concrete inner piece (the back -- not shown here -- had the look of something that was poured, rather than pried from the earth) with carving on it. There are two side pieces that may have held something. Lanterns? Planters? On either side, there are raised curved stones (one of which has fallen off and become embedded in the soil).

photo
On the way home from something I'll write about later, I also went through the Jewish cemetery again to look at some things that I saw from Google maps. They turned out to be nothing much, but I happened to see another grave with a photo of a young boy on it, which has suffered from the ravages of time.

rosette
Another thing I was able to get a decent shot of at last is the rosette from the first harpsichord Dad made. This was carved by his friend Dick Summerfeld, and includes the family initial in the trees, Dad's Roman numeral in the fence the faun stands on, and a reference to his bowhunting held by Diana. He replaced this with a new rosette he carved himself before he sold the instrument.

Interestingly, two of these photos have already had one view each. Either people are fast out there -- perhaps Flickr shows photos as they go up? -- or else Flickr notes sadly that nobody ever looks at my pretty pictures and, from time to time, assigns arbitrary "pity views" to my page stats.

Gotto go now. I have to watch TV with Sarah. Yay, Sponge Bob!

Just wait, soon that little girl will be asking you to curl up and watch Gilmore Girls with her. I can't believe it's been almost 13 years since we went to China to adopt our daughter. Sigh.

I wish we could have been a little younger at the time of parenthood, but then we wouldn't have Sarah, so I guess there's no point wishing for that. She is quite a girl -- did you see my entry from 3/24?

I just went and looked, so beautiful! Em was born and adopted in Nanchang(Jiangxi). My blog is: randommeanderings.typepad.com and if you scroll down to mid March you'll see her as she became a Bat Mitzvah.

I also wish we'd been younger and yet I agree, we have the children in our lives we were meant to have. Her brother Noah was adopted in Cambodia in 1999, he's 9 now.

Of course, here in MA being the Asian child of Caucasian parents is pretty common seeming. For that matter, so is being Jewish, adopted and Asian. I was adopted as well, so the kids figure this is the only way one builds a family.

Yes, we do see Asian kids with Caucasian parents around a lot. It's like when you get a particular make of car and start to notice all the other cars like yours, I guess. You become aware in a way you weren't before. We'll miss the small community of (mostly) moms and daughters that we've been doing things with. The picture of Sarah on the slide is from the harvest festival in Wilbraham, where we went with Molly and Emily and Madison and their moms. I forget offhand if Abby was at that one. We expect to find the same sort of thing up in the Rochester area when we move, but it takes some time.

I remember when we were in Yue Xiu park in Guangzhou. I went off with the camera, snapping pictures of the bonsais and the sculptures and the palm trees. Then I realized that I was still seeing parents with Asian babies in strollers, but they were Asian parents. Uh oh! Time to run back and see if the bus is still there...

Em looks like a great kid, by the way. Such concentration! I'm not sure I had a comparable moment in my life, unless it was when I was on stage.

That rosette is really nifty. So your father made harpsichords? Wow.

From the first photo (the distance shot of the "holy" shed) it appears to still be cold in New England. Well, heck, it's still cold here, and, despite one hot day, it's been cold more than warm so far this year. A bit unusual for here.

He made two harpsichords and a clavichord. I have the clavichord.

It wasn't particularly cold. It was bordering on rainy with little demi-rain particles in the air and water on the ground. It was probably in the 40s.
